Their argument: newer models understand intent without elaborate prompts. Just ask naturally. System prompts are crutches.

The "It's More Important Than Ever" Camp

My camp. Here's why:

1. Structured Output

Getting consistent JSON, tables, or specific formats still requires precise prompting. The model is better, not telepathic.

2. Multi-Agent Systems

When agents talk to each other, prompt design IS system design. The prompt defines the agent's role, capabilities, and boundaries.

3. Cost Optimization

A well-crafted prompt uses fewer tokens and gets better results. At scale, this is real money.

What Changed

Prompt engineering shifted from "tricks to make the model work" to "system design for AI interfaces." It's more like API design now — less art, more engineering. Hence the name.
